Cruising is one of the most enjoyable forms of longboarding. I find it relaxing and enjoy my time spent appreciating the landscape while I ride. The amount of enjoyment you get will heavily depend on the wheels that you’re using!
No matter how good your board is, if you’re using the incorrect wheels, you won’t get the full potential out of your ride. This is why it is essential to get the best longboard wheels for cruising. I’ve checked some of the best wheels available in the market so you can get a clear idea of what makes a wheel great for cruising.
Shark Wheel is a well-known name when it comes to longboard wheels and their Shark Wheel Longboard/Cruiser Wheels lived up to my expectations. Aside from being great wheels for cruising, I love that these wheels perform well on all types of terrains. These wheels can easily go over rough terrains, pebbles, water, sand, and other debris.
The sine wave design of these wheels allows them to push aside small obstacles like loose gravel or pebbles. This means that you can ride smoothly without worrying about debris that may slow you down. Aside from providing consistent speed while you ride, this design also means that you are safer while riding.
Loose gravel, and small pebbles can cause you to lose control and this can cause wipeouts or other accidents. We all love cruising and knowing that we are safer while we ride is a definite plus; with safety in check it allows us to enjoy riding even more.
The design of these wheels also decreases the contact patch between the wheel and the road. Less contact means less friction and this should allow you to reach higher speeds. A decrease in friction also means that you will have an easier time pushing the board and will possibly be able to travel further, since you get to conserve your energy.
These wheels are also made durable because they have multiple center points as opposed to the single contact point of traditional wheels. Having multiple center points mean that it takes longer for Shark Wheels to wear off-center.
These wheels also come with Shiver ABEC-9 bearings with built-in spacers and speed rings. This makes purchasing Shark Wheel Cruiser Wheels a real value for money purchase.
Orangatang Kegel 80 mm Downhill Longboard Skateboard Cruising Wheels
If what you need are cruising wheels that will also perform great for downhills and high-speed rides then these wheels should be on top of your list. Orangatang is a respected brand of longboard wheels and they did not disappoint with their Kegel wheels.
Aside from cruising and downhills, these wheels are also ideal for hand carving, pumping, and long distance pushing.
Thanks to its large diameter, the Kegel rolls with breakneck speeds. These 80mm wheels will allow you to plow over cracks, rocks, sticks, and rough roads without affecting your ride. These road obstructions can cause vibrations during rides but I didn’t even feel a thing when using the Orangatang Kegel.
They have excellent vibration-dampening properties and as a result, I didn’t feel any pain on my knees whenever I hit cracks while riding. The wheels absorb most of the impact and I know you can also have a smoother and pain-free ride if you try these wheels on your longboard.
Orangatang Kegel are designed with sharp, square lips that provide maximum grip while riding. The additional grip that these wheels provide can help riders avoid losing control of their board and prevent any injuries while riding.
On top of all these, the Urethane formula used by Orangatang provides users with a smooth, plush ride with a buttery-smooth slide. The fully exposed 46mm core also helps reduce weight even as it provides quick acceleration and crisp slides. These wheels also come in two color options of different hardness. The Orange ones are 80a while the Purple ones are 83a.
ABEC 11 Flywheel, Refly, Superfly Longboard Wheel for Electric Skateboard, Downhill and Cruising Durometers
The ABEC 11 are some of the largest wheels available for cruising. They come in 4 specifications, 83mm x 52mm, 90mm x 52mm, 97mm x 52mm, and 107mm x 64mm. One thing that you should consider though before purchasing these wheels is whether they will fit your board. Some decks can handle large wheels while some may not be able to do so. Large wheels can damage your deck if you’re not careful since these wheels may increase the possibility of wheel bite. Don’t let the large size fool you though since these wheels are quite fast. The wheels have a hollow core designed to cut weight on the core so even though the wheels are large, they are lightweight.
Aside from being ideal wheels for cruising, these wheels will also work well with electric skateboards. You might need adapters for them to work.
The wheels come with two different formulas depending on your needs. They have the Classic Grip and the Slip Mix. The Classic Grip is ideal for those who need additional grip while they ride. The Slip Mix is the one that you need if you want wheels that can help you during slides.
FREEDARE 70mm Longboard Wheels with ABEC-7 Bearings and Spacers
This is another highly recommended option for those who are looking for great wheels at an affordable price. The Freedare wheels are already affordable but they also come with bearings and spacers when you purchase them. The bearings are ABEC-7 high steel bearings that are guaranteed to last for a long time.
There are higher ABEC rated bearings available but at this price, I don’t have any complaints. You can always keep the bearings as a spare for emergency purposes and purchase separate bearings that will suit your needs. They also come with spacers that everyone should have.
Spacers may look inconsequential but they work hard to extend the life of your bearings. They also distribute the weight of the board and rider to each bearing to ensure a more stable ride. The Polyurethane materials used in manufacturing these wheels make them durable.
They are able to smoothly go over small road pebbles so you can enjoy a smoother and safer ride all the time. The Freedare wheels come in 5 different colors and although the color selection is not as extensive as others, I’m sure you can find a color that will match your deck.
Lil’ Hoots Longboard Slide Wheels by Remember Collective
Lil’ Hoots Longboard Slide Wheels are some of the best wheels I have tried, they are especially good if you’re after great wheels to use for commuting and cruising. They are not too large but the 65mm diameter is more than enough to allow you to maneuver all sorts of road imperfections.
These wheels will allow you to continue your cruise at ease and without the unnecessary stops caused by road debris. Aside from cruising, these wheels are also great for sliding. The Centerset core of these wheels makes smooth slides easy to initiate.
The Urethane compound used in these wheels make sliding effortless. On top of that, these 65mm wheels use a Urethane formula that is made to last longer than other similar compounds. The wheels come in several durometers depending on your riding preference.
You can get the harder wheels if you want more slides while the softer ones can provide you with more grip as you ride. These wheels are ideal for beginners since they are easier to control and might help prevent wipeouts while practicing.
Among the great wheels mentioned above, the best one for me are the Shark Wheel Cruiser Wheels. They are enjoyable to use and they make cruising so much easier. These wheels are excellent to use on all types of terrains. Some might say that they only use their longboard on a particular terrain but it is always a good thing to have wheels that can handle any type of terrain.
The sine wave design of these wheels means that they simply push away any debris that comes in their way. Be it pebbles, small rocks, twigs, or loose gravel, these wheels allow you to roll around them without any effect on your speed. The sine wave design also allows you have complete control of your ride. Safety is always a priority for me and it gives me immense satisfaction to know that these wheels allow me to decrease the possibility of wipeouts.
Another benefit derived from the sine wave design is the decrease in friction. These wheels have less contact on the ground while they roll. This translates into less friction which means that you get to enjoy maximum speed while you ride.
Aside from these great features, these wheels are also a bargain since they come with free Shiver ABEC-9 bearings when you purchase them. ABEC-9 is one of the highest ratings a bearing can get. For me though, ABEC-9 bearings are more than enough for me to get the precision that I need while I ride. They also come with spacers so I can extend the life of my bearings.
What size of wheels should I buy?
The diameter of a wheel affects not just the height of the ride, they also dictate how fast you can accelerate. Another thing that is dependent on the wheel diameter is the tightness of your turns. Smaller wheels are usually slower.
If you want to cruise at a faster pace then you might want to get larger wheels. Large wheels are also ideal for cruising because they offer more balance while you ride. This is why cruiser wheels are ideal for beginners who are still testing their balance. Balance and speed are two things that make cruising more enjoyable which is why larger wheels are preferred.
How do I choose the wheel durometer?
Durometer pertains to how hard the longboard wheel is. The lower the number of the Durometer is, the softer the wheels are. Wheels with 87a and lower durometers are considered soft wheels. Harder wheels are faster while softer wheels are slower but provide better grip. Softer wheels also offer more stability while riding.
A great cruising wheel is a wheel that makes cruising not just enjoyable but safe as well. The Shark Wheel Cruiser Wheels deliver both. They are safe to use in any terrain. Their design allows these wheels to just push away small obstacles that might reduce your speed or cause you to lose control while you ride.
With the Cruiser Wheels, you get to maintain your speed while you ride and you also decrease the chance of wipeouts which may result in injuries. These wheels are also durable so you can use them for a long time. They come with ABEC-9 bearings and spacers so you don’t have to spend on those parts anymore!
Overall, the Wheel Shark Cruiser Wheels are fun to ride without sacrificing comfort and safety; this is why they are the best longboard wheels for cruising for me.
