Whenever I look for a longboard, I always take my time to make sure that I get the best longboard there is without having to break the bank. I need my longboard to be durable so that I won’t have to purchase a new one after just a few months.
It should also look good. I’m not vain but I’d rather have a good looking board if it is on offer. Most boards look great and come with amazing features but they also have hefty price tags. Which is why the task of finding a great board that looks good while being affordable takes time.
I can assure you that the research is worth it; my discovery of the Atom longboard is one that has improved my riding experience significantly.
Atom Drop Deck Longboard (41-Inch)
Atom’s Drop Deck Longboard is an ultra-low-riding longboard that promises maximum stability, especially for new riders who have yet to master their riding stance. The design of this longboard makes it ideal for downhill carving.
And since it sits closer to the ground, it is easy to push so it is also an excellent choice for those who love going on long-distance rides or even those who just want to go kicking around town.
The new perimeter shape of this board gives riders a 9.6inch leverage for every turn. The drop deck construction helps to reduce wheel bite thus prolonging the usable life of this board.
The first thing that we noticed when we compared the Atom Drop Deck Longboard to the popular Minority Downhill Maple Longboard is that both boards use fully laminated maple wood. The Atom is longer by just 1 inch compared to the Minority, which is 40 inches long.
Full Maple Laminate Deck
The deck of the Atom Drop Deck is 41 inches long and is made from full maple laminate. It is common to use maple wood in making longboard decks and for good reason. Maple is one of the sturdiest woods available.
It makes the deck durable so you can enjoy your board for longer. One thing that I noticed is that since the deck is made to be solid, there is almost no flex to it while riding.
The good thing about that is that it makes for a very stable board especially when you’re going fast down hills. On the downside it also makes the board very stiff. However, the stiffness is not something that you should worry about in this deck and I’ll explain the reasoning in a bit.
Drop Deck Design
As its name implies, this longboard has a drop deck design. So, why should that design matter? For one, a board with a drop deck design is incredibly stable. The board is designed so that the middle section of the board is lower than the ends.
This results in a cradling effect that protects riders from speed wobbles as they go for those high-speed downhills. Speed wobbles are something that I take seriously because it can result in injuries. Speed wobbles are not ominously called “death wobbles” for nothing and they can be dangerous if you don’t know what to do when you experience one.
Thankfully, you’re less likely to experience one when you’re riding a drop deck.Another good reason for having a drop deck board is it gives riders a very secure grip on their board. Riders should find it easier to initiate and control slides when they’re riding a drop deck.
Remember what I said earlier about not being too concerned about the board being too stiff? Well, this Atom longboard absorbs more vibration or shock from the ground as opposed to say a pintail. This means that even if the board is stiff, it also doesn’t transfer as much shock from the road to your body.
Yes, it may feel uncomfortable to ride because of its stiffness but that is balanced out by the shock-absorption properties of this board.
Lastly, since this board is positioned so close to the ground, it is easier to push. Your foot doesn’t have to go as far to push the board so you won’t tire quickly. It also puts less strain on your calf and leg muscles. This is an excellent board for long distance traveling since you use less energy when riding.
This is something that I’ve experienced with my other boards. They have high profiles so I use more energy pushing them. It is tiring and forces me to take frequent rests so I can soothe my calves. And no, it has nothing to do with my age, I entirely blame it on the deck design.
This is an ideal longboard for those who use their boards for long commutes. Riders who love taking long rides for leisure will also love this board. There is one drawback to the drop deck design though. The undersides of drop deck longboards are more prone to scratches and damages.
Since it sits closer to the ground, it is more likely to catch the ground if you use it for carving. It is also not ideal for riding along urban areas where you need to frequently transfer from street to sidewalk since the underside may catch on the sidewalk and damage the board.
The Atom Drop Deck is equipped with Wide-Lip 70mmx51mm super high rebound (SHR) urethane wheels. The name of the wheels says it all. These wheels are not just stable, they are also flexible. High rebound wheels, on the other hand, make rides faster.
This is especially noticeable when riding over rough surfaces. High rebound is usually found on soft wheels. But this is not the case for the Atom. It has wheels with a hardness of 78A. This means that you get the high rebound with the control that hard wheels also provide.
If you frequently ride in an area with rough surfaces like unpaved roads, then the wheels on this board can do wonders for you.
The wheels are complemented by the 50-degree Reverse Kingpin Trucks. These trucks provide additional flexibility thanks the 245mm axles. With these type of trucks, you can make sharp and sudden turns swiftly and with ease.
To complete the set-up, this board is also equipped with high-quality ABEC-9 bearings. These bearings are made to endure more friction and heat when compared to other bearings. The bearings of our boards have ball bearings inside of them.
When we ride, the bearings roll causing the ball bearings to roll and grind against each other. This grinding motion results in friction and heat. And as with any other objects that are subjected to extreme friction and heat, the ball bearings can break under such pressure.
This is something that you don’t have to worry about because ABEC-9 bearings are constructed to take extreme friction and heat without incurring any damage. These bearings are also pre-lubricated to further enhance their friction and heat resistance properties.
Things to consider before buying an Atom drop deck longboard
Before you rush into buying an Atom drop deck longboard, there are several things that you should take into consideration. First is the riding style that you want to use it for.
If you love doing tricks then this is not the board for you, you might want to consider a symmetrical longboard with kicktails that can help you practice your tricks and refine your techniques. The Atom Drop Deck is also not an ideal board for those who like high-speed rides, if you need a board for fast rides, you might find pintails more suitable for your needs.
Drop decks are made for those long cruises where the pace is leisurely. The drop-down deck makes riding comfortable and adds stability so you are not always worrying about your riding stance. Sure, it can perform well even when you’re riding fast but it is not made for racing.
The Atom Drop Deck is also better suited for riding over smooth and even surfaces. The high rebound wheels on this board can take care of vibrations.
However, due to its low-profile deck, there is a higher chance of scratching or damaging the underside of your deck if you happen to ride over a rock or if you’re switching from street to sidewalk which is most likely if you’re riding in urban areas.
This is an excellent deck for those who use their board for their daily commutes since the low-profile makes it more stable and promotes ease of pushing. However, this is not ideal for urban commute where you have to ride around crowds.
Of course, there are no stopping urban commuters from riding a drop deck but caution should be taken when riding from street to sidewalk so that the underside of the deck can be protected.
RIMABLE Bamboo Pintail Longboard
If you are looking for a board that will do great for urban commutes then the Rimable Bamboo Pintail may be a great alternative. Its pintail design makes it easier to control when you’re moving around people. The deck is a combination of maple and bamboo which gives it strength and flexibility.
Since the deck has a higher profile compared to the Atom Drop Deck, you should comfortably ride this over small road imperfections and even move from street to sidewalk without the fear of damaging the underside of the deck.

Don’t be fooled with its size though, even though his board is long, it uses light materials so you can still carry it around without any problems.

The Atom Drop Deck longboard is a perfect fit for my needs. The most significant requirement that I have is for the board to be durable so I can use it for a long time. This longboard has proven itself tough and there are even customers who praised this longboard for having lasted years without breaking or snapping.
The maple wood used in its deck is very tough. The drop deck design is also ideal for those long rides that I really enjoy. The deck stands closer to the ground so it is more stable. And since my foot is also closer to the ground, pushing it is a lot easier.
I no longer tire easily because I don’t have to exert as much effort whenever I’m riding this longboard. If you want to know more about the Atom Drop Deck Longboard, then check it out here.
