The longboard label Landyachtz is the fruit of a long-standing friendship between men with a shared passion for skating and therefore does not only stand for skateboards that can be traced back to many creative and hard-working years full of experimentation and passionate energy, but it was also founded and driven forward by two true skater souls.
Landyachtz is therefore clearly one of the labels on the international skateboard manufacturing market that is based on an ideological and not a capitalist principle. Especially the romantics and idealists among the skaters may attach an essential value to this label philosophy.
The initial spark for the label Landyachtz
For the Landyachtz company, which today has around 20 employees, and its outstanding product range, basically only one thing was needed – or better two: two skatecrazy students with lots of ideas.
Michael Perreten and Thomas Edstrand, who had already gone to elementary school together, met again in 1997 after years at the University of Victoria and found not only back to their friendship, but also to their common passion, skating.
Just like Mike, who meanwhile was cruising around the campus on a self-built board, Tom had in the meantime gained experience in skateboard construction in his free time. After years of separate development paths, the meanwhile matured friends soon discovered their different talents, which in combination with each other offered an ideal basis for a skateboard company: While Tom was extremely talented artistically and had a penchant for drawing, Mike distinguished himself by his special craftsmanship.
Two talents, two types, two passions: Landyachts was born. The first year at the university was dedicated to skateboard making, which was at the beginning still dominated by exuberant amateurism, mistakes and prototypes, just like Sturm & Drang.
But every further step brought the team further towards success thanks to the never-ending vision in their heads. After various jobs, which extended their practical experience in artistic and craft skills, the friends were offered a workshop room of a ski club in Whistler, so that for the first time an official room for new ideas and creative crafts existed.
After further experimentation with the aim of making a name for themselves on the skateboard market, Mike and Tom soon shifted to the design and manufacture of lowered boards, mainly through contact with a certain skateboard specialist Jody Wilcock, with the DH Race and Urban Assault models dominating production.
After a few years of vagabonding through various warehouses, garages and workshops, Landyachtz finally found its final headquarters in Vancouver after Mike and Tom had finished university.
Completely without high-tech equipment and modern machines, the Landyachtz team has always produced its innovative and unique boards, which are characterized by functional sophistication, solid craftsmanship and above all by the passion for skating that is in every piece, which is the common denominator and credo of the entire staff.
The Landyachtz Boards
If you browse through the Landyachtz board range, you can immediately feel the label’s passion for skating. The skateboards are divided into the Freedom Series for freestylers, the Urban Series for casual cruising in the city, the Downhill Series for those who love speed and the Progression Series for advanced skaters with special ambitions. A particularly popular board that is suitable for many levels is the Switch 35 or 40.
Originally designed as a downhill board, it offers excellent stability and easy maneuverability. Its lowered footprint keeps the feet securely in place and makes the kick especially effective. It is not for nothing that the Switch Board has become a customer favorite within a very short time.
The Dinghy series is made exactly for everyday cruisers, and again there are different versions available. Located in the Urban Series category, these are boards for everyday and opportune skating from A to B.
Whether Dinghy Sunset, Dinghy Arrows, Dinghy Mountains or the small Dinghy Thunderbird – the boards of this series are real all-rounders and great to handle companions for a relaxed and casual progress in the city. The Bamboo Stout, a hybrid cruiser with a smooth ride and a great grip due to soft-tops on the footprint, is an innovative material.
The Bamboo Stout, a hybrid cruiser with a smooth ride and a super grip due to soft-tops on the footprint, is an innovative material. The especially narrow axle base makes the undercarriage extremely responsive and turns this classic board into an effortlessly manoeuvrable freestyler. “The Evo” is one of the most cult downhill boards of all times.
The narrow front and the wider rear section create more room to move at the front and less at the back, ensuring ultimate stability. A racing board with a stylish design, which is easy to start and develops an unknown speed. For retro fans and lovers of the Seventies, the board “Invader” has just been launched in 2015.
Its classic pool shape is combined here with a modern lowered design of the footprint and gains excellent functionality and smooth steerability due to the slim nose and compact tail.
This makes the Invader a board classically inspired in its design aesthetics and yet functionally equipped with state-of-the-art mechanisms. The Loco series, which is available in 4 different size categories, is also ideally suited for enjoyable skating in all variations.
For extravagant and creative moves in the skatepark, relaxed progress and smooth street skating, the Loco and Loco 33 is an ideal and faithful companion, while the larger versions Loco 35 and Loco 37 are especially designed for dynamic gliding and swinging over the course at higher speeds.
Depending on their field of use, the boards of different sizes are adorned with dyed-in-the-wool and original designs. If you can already proudly call yourself an advanced skater, the board Tomahawk gives you the ultimate kick for your tricks and moves:
The symmetrically constructed board shines with incredible flexibility for clean skating, a super comfortable footprint with a spreaded axle base and a subtle, almost psychedelic design. The specific Hollowtech construction makes the Tomahawk super light and smooth to maneuver for everything you want to do in skating.
Landyachtz Longboards on the test bench
Do you want to hear solid anecdotes that prove the quality of Landyachtz longboards? Landyachtz has a proven track record of successful use of its boards, as the label has sponsored a whole range of professional skaters since 2001.
Landyachtz’s sponsorship activity began when Mike and Tom met the ambitious and powerful skater Bricin Lyons and decided to sponsor him because of his inimitable agility and rapid speed. In close and energetic collaboration with Coastlongboarding, Ladyachtz created one longboarding event after the other and thus developed the sport of longboarding considerably.
Through their efforts, Landyachtz transformed the city of Vancouver into a real pilgrimage site for longboarders from all over the world.
The activities in the organisation of longboard events not only introduced Landyachtz to international circles of athletes, manufacturers and organisers, but also pushed the conception and production of new, innovative longboards.
Landyachtz used the experience gained from involvement in competitions and events as a source of inspiration for the functional optimisation of its boards, achieving visible
Successes: In 2005 Tom himself won the IGSA World Cup in Downhill Skateboarding, a title that was awarded three more times to different riders of Landyachtz Longboards: One year later, in 2006, Frederick Lindstrom took it and in 2008 Scott Smith won the Cup.
An impressive series of successes that not only testifies to the quality and smart functionality of Landyachtz Longboards, but is also direct proof that after all these years of working up the ranks, the label’s creations are now able to compete in the highest league and on an international level.
The special thing about Landyachtz
Compared to other manufacturers, the Landyachtz longboard label is distinguished first and foremost by its ideological and down-to-earth approach to the production of longboards.
The long history of the label, which is based on an unconditional love of skating, which made the two-member founding team willing to work hard and make some sacrifices, was thus able to develop into honest success through a good capital of talent and a shirt-sleeved production method.
Even today, Landyachtz is still a longboard manufacturer with authentic ambitions for skating, after the team has developed into a high-performance, multi-member company. The large and diversified wealth of experience in all skating disciplines from downhill skating to freeriding, carving and cruising, which the team has gathered over many years of cooperation and organisation at worldwide longboard events, is the solid foundation for the boards, which are designed with a differentiated focus on specific functionalities and which are often elevated to the Kings of the Road through a high aesthetic and artistic share in the initial philosophy with unusual and cult designs.
