Ben Mackay stood on a plastic skateboard for the first time when he was 5 years old and through this experience, he set himself the goal to build high quality and durable skateboards. After 12 years of experience in the skateboard industry, Ben now inspires us with the Penny Plastic Cruiser skateboards.
What’s behind: History & Philosophy of Penny
Penny Boards bring back memories of the skateboards of the ’60s and influences from the early days of skateboarding can definitely be found in the brand founded in 2010. The founder of the longboard brand Penny – Ben Mackay – has been a passionate border since childhood.
Already at the age of five, Mackay was the proud owner of his first board made of plastic. While riding on the nearby hill, he quickly realized that time on the four wheels triggered true feelings of happiness. He built this excitement and adrenaline into his Penny Longboards almost 30 years later – with the intention that it would be forever. And this, how could it be otherwise, after training as a carpenter.
Thanks to his passionate commitment and years of experience, his understanding of what it takes to produce is undisputed. The founder’s goal is to exceed the buyer’s expectations in terms of performance and looks with each of his skateboards.
Perfect uniqueness: The Penny Board
Inspired by skateboards for children, Ben Mackay developed the Penny Skateboards for demanding skaters. High-quality materials meet the demands of amateurs and professionals.
You can be sure that you are getting quality goods without exception and no nicely packed hazardous waste.
In contrast to the classic skateboards and the normal cruisers, the decks of Penny’s cruisers and longboards are made of high-quality plastic and not of wood or fibreglass as usual.
The mobile bases therefore only have a low weight. Nevertheless, they are super stable and very good to ride. Of course, the decks cannot be compared with the plastic boards of the 80s, because Penny boards have – thanks to their stability and resistance – a high-quality standard.
Type & construction of Penny Boards
The boards are pre-assembled and consist of perfectly matched components. The deck is made of a special plastic, which combines stability and flexibility. You don’t need a Griptape because the surface of the deck has a special waffle structure that gives you enough grip on the board. Basically pennies always consist of the same components, but there are some variations despite the proven elements.
This concerns, on the one hand, the length – the cruisers are available in 22 inches (56cm) and in 27 inches (68.5cm) – and on the other hand the width. Here you can choose between 6 inches and 7.5 inches. A longer board offers more stability, but also less agility. Beginners should rather choose a longer version.
The wider skateboards are more stable and easier to ride. There are also many variations in colour. Per se the boards are colourful, colourful and an absolute eye-catcher. The colour variations are recognizable in the name: Classics are solid colours, faders have a colour gradient in the deck, pastels come in pastel colours and graphics are provided with a graphic, which is usually particularly striking and stylish. The axles and castors are coordinated and made of special, lightweight aluminium.
The rollers have a hardness of 83A and are equipped with a plastic core. Therefore they are soft and perfect for cruising. In addition, the castors are not affected by small unevenness on the asphalt. Those of the cruisers have a diameter of 59mm, those of the longboards 69mm, which is suitable for fast riding.
